Whats the best scenic place to go in Mexico?

Posted on Feb 25, 2010 under Mexico Beaches | 5 Comments

Just wondering (from those of you who have been or live there) which is the best scenic place to go in Mexico? Best beaches? An where did you stay? Thank you so much in advance.

I think the best site seeing location, for beauty and for history are the pyramids at Chichen Itza. The Kukulkan is magnificent and it was just named one of the new wonders of the world.

We stayed in the Mayan Riviera, which was about 4 hrs from this site, but we covered it in a guided day tour. The beaches here were fantastic, much bigger than at the resorts in say, Cancun so you were able to spread out, etc. and it didn’t feel crowded. The sand was beautiful, soft and white, and the water was great too.

The great thing about the Mayan Riviera is it has great shopping/nightlife (Playa del Carmen and fairly handy access to Cancun) but without all the over-tourist-population, etc.

Specifically, we stayed at the Barcelo Maya Colonial and I couldn’t have been happier with the resort. The rooms, beach, restaurant, staff, etc. were all great. I wrote reviews of both my stay there and my trip to Chichen Itza for The Canadian Traveler and they are in the sources below.

I didn’t like Mexico– but there’s really blue water and actually normally 70 dolphins visible in the waters near La Paz.
La Paz was the only place in Mexico i liked =] and Cabo San Lucas.

I’ve been to Cancun, Cozumel, and Cabo San Lucas, and I’d say it really depends on what you’re looking for.

The Cancun/Cozumel/Playa Del Carmen side has the most incredible turquoise water and sugary soft beaches. Very postcard-perfect beaches.

Cabo has cool rock formations, desert, mountains, and migrating whales to check out. There are golf courses on bluffs overlooking the Pacific that are also very scenic. I prefer the restaurants, bars, and people of Cabo vs. Cancun, but it’s really a matter of personal opinion.
